Survival of the Fittest


Six months after Cyclone Aila struck the south-western coastal area of Bangladesh, people are still living in very poor conditions with most of their belongings remaining buried beneath the mud and water. Khulna, Bangladesh. 26/12/2009.
The cyclone Aila has ravaged many upazillas and unions at Khulna division in Bangladesh. Near about 120 people died and thousands of people have been wounded and almost 50,000 domestic animals have died in the south-western coastal area of Bangladesh. High tidal waves churned by strong winds have inundated vast swathes of land and destroyed the agriculture crops and farms. Thousands of people are still
unable to return their home after six months as most of the lands are still submerged under water and people cannot repair their home. People are living in shanties made with polythene & bamboo and are struggling to survive their lives in terrible cold in this winter season and many people are moving here and there as all their belongings are buried in the water. Many roads have been destroyed and the only usable vehicle is boat.
People are suffering from drinking water crisis and they had to bring the drinking water from a long distance, as the whole areas are filled with high salt concentration. Almost all the trees are dead in this place.
